Postpartum Depression

Commonly known as the baby blues, postpartum depression affects three out of four new moms. This type of depression shares the same set of symptoms as major depression. A common indicator for the baby blues is being in an intense dark mood after giving birth.

Depression Affecting Kids

Did you know this mental health condition affects around two percent of school-age children in the U.S.? In addition, one in ten teens are struggling with depression. A common telltale sign is the child’s inability to enjoy the company of friends or finish school assignments. While the symptoms are the same as depression in adults, depression in children is difficult to diagnose.

Diagnosis and Treatment

There is no definite way to accurately diagnose this condition. For now, doctors have to rely on how the patient describes his or her symptoms. For this reason, the patient will be asked about his or her medical history or medications taken, which may be evaluated if it has contributed to the mental condition.

Treatment for depression ranges from talk therapy to medication. Exercise has also been a widely resorted to technique to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Social support and having pets around also greatly contribute to improving the mental state of the patient.
